VIDEO – An increasingly desperate candidate, Mitt Romney (appearing with Meatloaf), falsely told a crowd in Ohio that Jeep is moving all production to China. Romney’s claim was quickly debunked, drawing a scathing response from the executive management of Chrysler (Jeep).
Mitt Romney has now become so desperate, that his dishonesty has shifted into overdrive. Last night in Ohio, knowing he was near a Jeep manufacturing plant in Toledo, Romney told the crowd a complete lie: that Jeep was “thinking of moving all production to China”. Where did Romney get such information? He was repeating a rumor from a right-wing blog. Yes, the man who wants to be president of the United States has gotten so desperate that he is willing to shock a local crowd in Ohio based on false information.
Chrysler’s response to Romney’s lie:
“Let’s set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China. It’s simply reviewing the opportunities to return Jeep output to China for the world’s largest auto market.
U.S. Jeep assembly lines will continue to stay in operation. A careful and unbiased reading of the Bloomberg take would have saved unnecessary fantasies and extravagant comments.”
In fact, Romney’s lie to the Ohio crowd came just hours after the Detroit Free Press reported that 1,100 new Chrysler workers will help boost production of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs in Detroit beginning next week. Also, Chrysler is investing $500 million to upgrade its plant in Toledo to build the replacement for the Jeep Liberty and is in the process of hiring 1,105 additional workers that are expected to start next fall.
The conclusion of Romney’s disgusting tactic in Ohio? He is not ready to be president or worthy of the office. Mitt Romney knew the information was false and was just using it to downplay the huge success of the auto bailout that gives President Obama a clear boost in the state. What does it say about Romney that he would say something so horrible to the people of Ohio, knowing that was not substantiated and was simply a blog rumor? It shows that Romney thinks of working people just as pawns. To the privileged, elite, CEO Romney, they are just “small people” that he thinks he can trick into voting for him.
Clearly, Mitt Romney is flailing in Ohio because he cannot connect with working people in a state where 1 of 8 jobs are tied to the auto industry, and Romney callously said we should just let that industry to go bankrupt. But it also typifies the lack of character Romney has shown in his willingness to say absolutely anything to pander to his current audience. He even tried to change his stance on the auto bailout during the final debate. But the polling shows that the people of Ohio are not as dumb as Mitt Romney thinks they are. They know who supported their auto jobs when times were tough and they know who said “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt“.
