VIDEO – Mitt Romney says he would end federal disaster relief. Romney even called spending federal money on disaster relief “immoral”.
In a natural disaster like a hurricane, it is hard to see the devastation and human suffering and come to any other conclusion than the fact that the people hit by the disaster need to get help from their country. But Mitt Romney sees more than that. He sees a way for the big banks to profit from it. Yes, Romney would like to privatize disaster relief as he said in a presidential debate during the Republican primary.
Mitt Romney wants his Wall Street banker buddies to be able to profit off of everything – absolutely everything – including natural disasters. Yes, natural disasters. When asked about FEMA during the debate, Romney said this:
ROMNEY: “Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better.”
MODERATOR JOHN KING: “Including disaster relief, though?”
ROMNEY: “We cannot — we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we’ll all be dead and gone before it’s paid off. It makes no sense at all.”
Again, that was Romney’s answer to a question about disaster relief.
Romney wants to send disaster relief back to the states? The whole point of federal disaster relief is to provide assistance to states suddenly stricken by a natural disaster because they are overwhelmed by the damage and costs of cleanup. For example, the actual cost of Hurricane Katrina’s damage was estimated between $96-$125 billion. The total proposed Louisiana state budget for fiscal year 2013 is only $25.5 billion.
Mitt Romney’s proposed There are certain things that we have to come together as a nation to provide for each other and natural disaster relief, one would think, is one of those things. Oh, but not Mitt Romney. He wants to tell the states “you are on your own” if a disaster like Hurricane Katrina strikes. Why? So his elite class can: a) pay less federal taxes and b) find some way to profit from human disaster.
There is no end to his callousness and the disdain Mitt Romney has for the Americans he calls the “47 percent”. Mitt Romney is an empty shell, driven only by a quest for profit – not profit for America – profit for the elite class that funds his campaign. He does not care about the American people or the well being of the country. He is out to find every possible way to get more profits for his Wall Street and big corporate funders, deregulate their industries, and lower their taxes.
Mitt Romney looks at things like Social Security, Medicare, and disaster relief and thinks it is such a shame that his Wall Street crowd can’t get a piece of the action.
