Pennsylvania GOP Admits Voter ID Law Is About Suppressing Democrats’ Votes

VIDEO – Republican Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Mike Turzai brags at the Republican State Committee meeting that their recently passed voter ID law will “allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania”.

The admission from Pennsylvania’s top Republican in the State House, that suppressing Democratic votes is the only way Mitt Romney could possibly win the state, shows the true motivation for voter ID laws that are being introduced by the GOP in states across the country.  Because the Republican party’s policies cannot win them statewide or national elections in many states, they have resorted to using their ability to pass voter suppression laws in order to disenfranchise young and minority voters who tend to vote Democratic.

The Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department is formally investigating if  Pennsylvania’s voter ID law is a violation of the Voting Rights Act.  Republicans claim the purpose of requiring voters to show a photo ID at the polls is to prevent voter fraud.  But in a stipulation statement the state signed, they have formally acknowledged that there has been no reported case of in-person voter fraud in Pennsylvania, and they “will not offer any evidence or argument that in person voter fraud is likely to occur in November 2012 in the absence of the Photo ID law.”
