VIDEO – Six-term Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO), is staying in the race for Senate against Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO). GOP party leadership and right-wing heavyweights begged Akin to drop out of the race after he exposed the Republican party’s extreme views on women’s rights in a recent interview saying a “legitimate rape” could not cause a pregnancy. In his new ad, Akin stands by his views, only admitting that he used the wrong words.
Akin’s statements remind the American public that Republican views of women are sexist, barbaric, and out of the mainstream. Many GOP operatives begged him to drop his bid for Sen. McCaskill’s seat so he could be replaced with a candidate that is better at masking the party’s views on women. Knowing it is now a lost cause, Karl Rove’s front group and Super PAC pulled their attack ads from Missouri’s Senate contest, as did the RNC. But they knew full-well his positions on abortion all along, they just don’t want to be associated with someone that is willing to openly admit the GOP is against abortion for rape and incest victims.
After waiting to see how others reacted to the news (a full 24 hours later), Mitt Romney called on Akin to drop out. In an interview with Sean Hannity (who also begged Akin to stop exposing GOP beliefs), Akin accused Romney of making “a big deal” out of his comments to improve Romney’s standing with women. But, that would also require women to ignore the fact that Romney also supports a Constitutional amendment that would deny abortions for rape and incest victims.
Paul Ryan attempted to get Akin to drop out due to the damage he will do to the Romney-Ryan ticket. Not only does Akin highlight their extreme views that would force a raped woman to give birth to her attacker’s baby, he also co-sponsored Paul Ryan’s bill that redefines rape.
But, Todd Akin is not dropping out. Instead, he is actually using his disgusting comments to raise money from other like-minded neanderthals. He even has a new ad of his own, but only apologizes for using the wrong words to express his backward views.
If you are a woman that has been raped, Todd Akin (as he says in his ad) will pray for you. But if you have become pregnant from a rape, Todd Akin, Mitt Romney, and Paul Ryan, would force you to carry for nine months and give birth to your attacker’s baby. This, from the so-called “party of small government”.
