Xenophobia – Negative Ad Strategy

A good strategy for negative political ads is using xenophobia – “an unreasonable fear of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange.”  We have even heard the candidates themselves ridicule their opponents just for being able to speak a foreign language.  There are actually portions of the electorate that are influenced by xenophobic stereotypes and these ads plant the seed in their heads that “maybe this guy is not like us”.  The most obvious example of this strategy at work is the large number of people that do not believe President Obama was born in the US and do not believe that he is a Christian.
